几(jǐ) and 多(duō) 少(shǎo)

几 [ jǐ ]
1. How many
"几" inquires about the number, usually a small number

e.g.

jǐ diǎn zhōng le?
几点钟了?
What's the time?; What time is it?


jǐ tiān ké yǐ wán gōng 
几天可以完工?
How many days will it take to finish the work?


jīn tiān jǐ hào ?
今天几号?
What's the date today?


nǐ jǐ hào?
你几号?
What's your number?


2. a few; several; some
"几" is normally followed by a measure word.

e.g.

èr shí jǐ gè rén 
二十几个人
twenty odd people;


guò jǐ tiān 
过几天
in a couple of days;


shuō jǐ jù huà 
说几句话
say a few words;


wǒ yǒu jǐ gè ,  kě shì bù duō 。 
我有几个, 可是不多。
I have a few, but not many.

多少 [duō shǎo ]

1. how many; how much

In the interrogative pronoun "多少", the second word "少" is in the neutral tone.

It may inquire about the amount, or an indefinite amount.The measure word following "多少" is often omitted.

e.g.

yǒu duō shǎo rén (gè)lái cān jiā wǎn huì ?
有多少人(个)来参加晚会?
How many people are coming to the party?


wèn tí bú zài yú nǐ dú le duō shǎo (běn) shū ,
问题不在于你读了多少(本)书,
ér zài yú nǐ dú le nǎ xiē yǒu jià zhí de shū 。
而在于你读了哪些有价值的书。
It is not how much you read but what you read that counts.


nǐ yào duō shǎo (qián)?
你要多少(钱)?
How much do you want?

2.  number; amount

e.g.

shù liàng bú lùn duō shǎo dōu jiāng shòu dào huān yíng 。 
数量不论多少都将受到欢迎。
Any amount, great or small, will be appreciated.
